This week, we’re sharing a competition created by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation in collaboration with the Sustainable Food Trust. It’s called the Big Food Redesign Challenge. Here, we’ll tell you what it’s all about and how you can participate if you’re part of this industry.
Why was this challenge created?
After analyzing global data, it’s clear that the food industry is responsible for emitting one-third of all greenhouse gases. Another alarming fact is that it’s considered one of the main drivers of biodiversity loss around the world. Many forest and jungle areas—once home to a rich diversity of animal and plant species—have been converted into grazing and livestock land.
This issue challenges us to rethink food ingredients and how food is made, aiming for greater respect for the environment and nature, and for this to become the norm in the near future. The goal is to involve and integrate the entire supply chain—from farmers to large retailers responsible for selling to the end consumer.
What is the Big Food Redesign Challenge?
In 2023, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, in collaboration with the Sustainable Food Trust, launched the competition to inspire the food sector to help build a better food system that supports the regeneration of nature, based on the principles of the circular economy.
The most important aspect of this challenge is that it allows all players in the food industry—producers, retailers, startups, and suppliers—to come together and propose new food products, or even redesign existing ones, with the aim of enabling the regeneration of nature.
The challenge includes three categories: design phase, production phase, and showcase phase.
